R.I.P. Sleepy Greg Lawrie
« on: Mon 17 Apr 2023 20:26:58 »
Gil Matthews just posted this on Facebook  :(

"It is with great sadness that i have to report that the great guitar player with CARSON has passed away.
Sleepy Greg Lawrie was a unique slide player that made this band what it was. Along with Broderick Smith's unique vocals and the other members, CARSON became a favourite of the 70's.
There big hit "Boogie" is well remembered by anyone that grew up with Australian music of the 70's."
Who knows where the time goes (Sandy Denny)

It is always sad news hearing of the passing of one of our contemporaries and this is no exception.

At Gil's FB post, Phil Manning comments: "In recent years he was somewhat of a recluse, writing and recording jazz-infused original guitar music, but as far as I know none or little of it was released..."

When I had a look into what Sleepy has been doing post-Carson and Matt Taylor, I was very surprised to find the main digital websites have a total of six solo albums by him, all released in 2020 (between August 1 and November 14, 2020), via Laneway Music.
That is a total of 50 original titles, almost 6 hours of music... in the space of one year.  In all likelihood his life's work.

Also in 2020 Aztec Records issued Carson - On The Air Recorded Live 1970-1973, a double-disc set that included a "fresh" interview with ‘Sleepy’ Greg Lawrie
